Is a daret halal?

In short

A daret involves no interest, no lender and no charge on the contributions: every member pays the same total and receives the same total, so nobody gains at anyone else’s expense. That absence of riba is why the practice is widely accepted in Morocco. It is not a religious ruling — for a formal fatwa, ask a qualified scholar.

Because a daret moves money between people, many Moroccans ask whether it is permissible. The question really comes down to one thing: is there riba?

What riba means here

Riba, in the sense that matters for savings, is a surplus paid on a loan: you give back more than you took, or you receive more than you gave, purely because time passed. Any arrangement where money grows by itself in exchange for waiting falls into that category.

Why a daret contains no riba

The point scholars discuss

The one nuance raised is timing: whoever receives the pot in month one has, in effect, been advanced money by the others and repays it over the cycle, while whoever receives it last has effectively lent. Because that advance is interest-free and every member both gives and receives it, most contemporary scholars treat it as a form of mutual interest-free lending (qard hasan) rather than riba. A minority prefer that the order be drawn rather than sold or negotiated.

What would make a daret problematic

Darret is built without any of the three: the order is fixed at creation, there are no charges on the money, and the app takes no commission.

A note

This page explains how a daret works in financial terms and reports how the practice is commonly viewed. It is not a fatwa. For a ruling that applies to your situation, ask a qualified scholar.

Key facts

Frequently asked questions

Does a daret pay interest?

No. There is no interest at any point. The pot equals the sum of the contributions and nothing is added to it.

Is the first person to receive the pot getting an advantage?

They receive money earlier, but they still pay the same total as everyone else, and they hand the same advantage to the next member. Over the cycle each member both gives and receives the early access.

Can I pay someone to take their turn?

Buying or selling a position introduces a payment tied purely to timing — exactly what makes an arrangement problematic. Fix the order when the circle is created instead.

Does Darret take a commission?

No. Darret is free: no commission on contributions and no hidden fees.
